Iburi & Hidaka

Area Information

The Iburi and Hidaka areas on the Pacific Ocean coast are blessed with magnificent natural environments, including coastal scenery, lakes and volcanoes, and plains where thoroughbreds gallop. Compared to other parts of cold, snowy Hokkaido, the areas are known for their comparatively mild weather and as comfortable places to live. Iburi has recently attracted worldwide attention as the venue of the 2008 G8 Toyako Summit, and the designation of a Global Geopark there, in 2009.

Sightseeing & leisure

The magnificent nature of Lake Toya, as seen by visiting world leaders. The area’s popular volcanic sightseeing spots of Mt. Usu and Showa Shinzan provide a sense of the living earth. Summit-related materials are on display in the Memorial Museum established after the historical event had taken place. In Hidaka, the home of Japanese thoroughbreds, legendary race-horses can be seen and horse trekking can be enjoyed. The Iburi and Hidaka areas are also known for their Ainu culture and traditions. Learn about the life of the Ainu by visiting the Ainu Museum in Shiraoi and the Nibutani Ainu Culture Museum in Biratori.

Hot springs

Toyako Onsen was established around the hot springs that resulted from the volcanic activity of Mt. Yosomi, and celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2010. Noboribetsu Hot Spring is another popular hot-spring resort with various spring water properties, as well as Jigoku Dani (Hell Valley), Oyunumakawa natural footbath and other tourist spots in the vicinity.

Food

The Iburi and Hidaka areas boast abundant marine and livestock produce. Spring is the season for Sakhalin Surf Clam in Tomakomai and sea urchin in Hidaka. Autumn is best for shishamo smelt caught in Mukawa or Mombetsu. Hidaka’s famous whelks are delicious all year round. Meat lovers should sample the nationally famous Shiraoi Beef, which was served to leaders’ spouses at the G8 Summit. Other specialty beef brands in the region include Mukawa Beef, Toyako Beef, Biratori Beef, Mitsuishi Beef, and Erimo Shorthorn Beef.

Souvenirs

There are a variety of souvenir shops in the spa resorts. Why not find something to remind you of your trip, from a variety of goods including carved wooden bears, soap made from the hot-spring minerals, local T-shirts and wooden swords inscribed with the name of Lake Toya, which became popular after one was carried by a character in a famous Japanese anime.
