This expansive region on the Sea of Okhotsk coast has an atmosphere similar to that of Europe, ice floes approach the coast in the severely cold winters, and the distinct changes in the seasons are vividly expressed in the landscapes.

The abundant natural surroundings, which include Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage site, as well as numerous lakes and wild animals, are filled with emotions and encounters that are hard to experience elsewhere. From spring to autumn, the meadows are awash with a variety of flowers such as pink moss phlox, over ten million tulips, and pretty cosmos blossoms. The contrast between the blue sky and the colorful flowers is extremely beautiful. The ice-breaking cruise ship penetrating the ice floes is a sight to behold, and the overwhelmingly spectacular nature never fails to surprise. A variety of hands-on activities in the great outdoors, such as ice-drift walking and guided tours are available, providing enjoyment throughout the year.

Thanks to its proximity to the Sea of Okhotsk, the region has abundant seafood and agricultural products that are typical of Hokkaido. Okhotsk seawater is enriched by nutrients in the ice floes, creating no less than marine treasure trove. Along with seafood such as crab, scallops, oysters and plump fish nurtured in the northern seas, thriving crop and dairy farming in the region ensures a fresh supply of vegetables, milk and the like. This region is a major producer of Hokkaido’s foodstuffs.
